Recovering After Surgery

We are strong proponents of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols and techniques. These protocols are designed to improve patient outcomes, shorten hospital stays, and promote quicker recovery times following surgery. At Apex Brain & Spine, we are focused on optimizing each phase of recovery, from managing pain effectively to encouraging early mobility and proper nutrition.

  • After surgery, post-operative soreness and pain at the site of surgery is expected and can vary from person to person and depending on the surgery.

  • All efforts will be made to ensure pain is controlled with multi-modal analgesia, which is using all different types of medications in combination to address the different aspects of pain including muscle spasm, nerve pain, inflammation.

  • While opioid medications can help manage pain after surgery, they are associated with many side effects including nausea, vomiting, constipation, urinary retention, ileus, orthostatic hypotension, delirium, and oversedation. We make every effort to control post-operative soreness and pain with all alternative medications and methods to avoid these dangerous side effects.

Custom-Fitted Back Braces for Post-Surgical Support

For many spine surgery patients, a properly fitted back brace is an important part of early recovery. A brace provides external support to the surgical area, helps limit movements that could stress the healing spine, and can give patients the confidence to begin moving and walking sooner.

At Apex Brain & Spine, we offer custom-fitted back braces tailored to your anatomy and surgical procedure. An off-the-shelf brace may not provide the support your specific recovery requires, a custom fit ensures the brace does its job without causing discomfort or compensating in ways that slow healing.

Your surgical team will advise whether a brace is recommended for your procedure and how long you should wear it during recovery.
